Two Toned!

This shirt used to be too big and all the same color. BORING! So I updated it by adding sheer white fabric to the front and back.

I have not made too many shirts for myself. For the most part I have only tailored shirts to my size, but this shirt really excited me. I got to completely take it apart (minus the ft. Pocket) and put it back together. First I set up to make my pattern next I un assembled the shirt and got to cutting. After all my pieces were cut I pinned the fabric back together.

That is what you see in the first two pictures. Unfortunately my before picture magically deleted from my camera.. -Pretty bummed that this is becoming a habit for me.., but back to it! Finally the existing part came the part where my vision becomes a reality. I put it in my sewing and let the magic happen.

So happy my new shirt is a success and will most likely be in the fav category. Having something new to wear to work always a bonus!

Officially Sister-in-law

Last year my brother in law finally asked his girlfriend, best friend and mother of his beautiful daughter to marry him.
With that being said this summer was exciting for the Johnson family. The youngest of the Johnson men was getting married!
I was so excited to start crafting like it's no one's business. I took note of her hints and added a few of my own.
First there's the basket:
-He asked. You said YES! .. Now what?
I didn't get a pic of hers, but fortunately my sister from another mother is getting hitched! so I'll share hers with you. This basket had:
1.) A wedding magazine 2.) Ring holder 3.) Jewelry cleaner 4.) A check off of things to remember when planning a wedding 5.) A notebook 6.) A pen
7.) And of course Some chocolate
A little something for the bride tobe to use to get her thoughts organized.
Next She has a birthday in July. So I made her this eye catching hanger for her beautiful wedding dress to hang on. The hanger doesn't have the little notches for her garment straps to hang from. So I added some ribbon to assist with that..
For her bachelorette party I made her this cake. Yup, just enough nasty to bring a smile to all the girls face when I rolled in.
As you can see Barbie got a lil too tipsy! And had to use the cake... to holder her up.
For my Sister in laws bachelorette gift I made her a wifey tank And Reserved beach towels for the honeymoon.

Lastly the bride and groom asked their wedding guests to leave them a message on fabric squares.  (Such a great memento for the happy couple.) I took those squares and am stitching them all together. Turning it into a cozy blanket for my brother and sister in law to cuddle up with and reminisce.

Elsa Dress

My little miss asked me to make her an elsa dress for her Let it go singing video. Of course I said yes. So we went to the fabric store and she picked out the fabric she felt best matched her vision. I admit this actually took me some time to finish. My problem is everything looks so simple. Until I actually dig in.

The pattern alone took me two evenings to make. Didn't realize this dress had so many parts. I  now understand why they are asking for so much for the store bought pattern.

After cutting the fabric it was time for sewing. I have not worked with such delicate fabrics before. Y'all know all that hemming took some getting used to. All of the time was worth it. Little Miss was so happy when she had her first fitting. The boy was even surprised at how similar it looks to the movies dress.

After making the proper adjustments to the dress it was time to attack the zipper.  Umm.. did I say attack?! I ment attach..lol. See I used to shy away from zippers, but not anymore. I have a new found love for them and little miss was able to make her video. Everyone's happy in the Johnson household.

Table cloth to Circle skit

This lovely blue and white table cloth has been waiting for me to come up with a new look for it! The checkered print and weight of the fabric about to be upcycled made me think. The first thought that came to mind was a circle skirt. I currently own (only) one and love it.

I set to work making my pattern. I like to make a pattern incase I want to make a few. It takes time in the beginning, but it's woth not having to figure out measurements again later down the road.

Wish I took a picture for you of the original cloth, but I think the top pic showes you what I started out with. As you can see (but I didn't notice until the skirt was assembled) There is a giant stain in the center of my skirt! After assessing the situation I decided to change the skirt color to disguise and hid the stain on the front.

My handy helper is showing off my new system for coloring fabrics. She even made an ombre tee shirt and my boy ombred his shoe laces.

After the color change and drying was done of course I spy a whole staring me in the eye! Discouragement set in. Until I dug in my threads and discovered I have thread similar in color (hallelujah! ) I was able to sew the whole closed and even rocked it to work already. Now I am looking forward to pairing it with some winter tights.

Dreams do come true!

I can hardly believe it has already been a yr! Last year the Johnson clan took a vacation to Disney World in Florida.

Seeing it was the longest driving trip my kids had been on. I decided to make them seatbelt pillows. I upcycled one of MrJohnson's old shirts and one of little miss' princess pillowcases for this project. They turned out so well. I was even able to add a cellphone pocket to the front for the boy's phone (sweet!). My favorite part would be that my kids still use them and they hardly ever leave the car. Unless they need washing....

Pant Tailoring

Got a call from a family friend in a crunch. He had to buy a pair of pants for a funeral. The pants he bought were too long and he obviously wanted them hemmed, but he also wanted a cuff added to them. I told him of course! That is no problem.

Custom Onesie

I could not resist making these cute onesies! The batcave is probably my favorite. Mom and dad to be are really digging it too! This mom is defiantly going to have the best-dressed baby boy in town.

Do you have a tee, tank onsie you want customized?

Pacifier lanyard

These things will prove to be every mom’s best friend. Gone are the days of finding clean water to wash that pacifier your lovely child keeps spitting out on the floor. These are so popular! I made a custom batman pacifier lanyard for a new bundle coming soon!

This set is changeable. This mom is gonna be able to mix and match depending on her little boys outfit. I must say that is just what the fashion doctor ordered.

Burp cloths

I made these burp cloths for an expected mother I know. They are a great match to the jungle-hooded blanket I made a while back.

Every baby needs burping after eating. With that said some babies spit up more than others do. Burp cloths are a mothers helping hand when it comes to spit up clean up! Lets face it some babies are more graceful when spitting up, leaving hardly any mess to clean up. Then there is the baby who overeats and spits up all over your work outfit Yup, that is always fun! These clothes feature a straight edge to keep your shoulder covered and a curved edge to fit nicely a long side your neck.

Play skirt

I thought of my little girl in mind with this skirt. She is so girly, yet she plays hard. She does not mind getting dirty while she's playing as a matter of fact I think she may have mastered dirt. lol.

I made this skirt in dedication to the girls who love to be girly, but also like to play hard. These kind of skirts are great because they have patterns to cover those little things like stains. Now we can let our girls play hard and look cute while wearing their summer skirts.

Nursing scarf

New infinity scarf idea! This one I think will be attractive to all the mommies who are breastfeeding. I can be the first to say it can be uncomfortable to be in a public when your little one gets hungry. I admit times have changed since I have nursed, but I'm sure it can get awkward depending on the location.

Since I am on this scarf kick I decided to try making a nursing infinity scarf. This one I made out of leftover materials, but in my opinion it turned out nice. It is wide enough to give your little ones some privacy while eating too! wouldn't this make a great shower or hospital gift ? Or maybe you need one to add to your scarf collection? The options are endless:)

Started from the bottom....

As I was going through picture albums. I came across these pictures♥ they are of my very first sewing projects with and without my sewing machine. I made my oldest (Age 3) a Mike Wazowski costume for Halloween. I was so proud that I had accomplished my first homemade sewing machine project. I have also posted a picture of him in his bears costume (Age 2) Papa loved that. He was a bears fan... and my household is a packer home;) I also posted a picture of a maternity shirt turned hot mama top! I had not realized how long I've been on this sewing kick. Makes sense that MrJohnson bought me the sewing machine. He has always been the water to my seeds always encouraging my growth. That in itself is a blessing I'm thankful for.

I am a creative person who wants to do it all:) I am following my dreams (literally) and this is my journey. I hope you enjoy my work, leave me comments or even purchase some of my work as we go:) email sewnbymizzizj@gmail.com if you see something you like and like me on fb too! Facebook.com/sewnbymizzizj.

My fuzzy memories

This was my dads blanket he got when he started dialysis and the bandanas were my little sister's. She wore them all the time. As you can see she had one in every color.

Since my dad's passing I have had this blanket on my bed. It's been perfect, I'm usually chilli and need a blanket to get cozy and warm when I relax.
Since my sister's murder the bandanas have been folded in storage. Because I did not want to lose or misplace any of them.

I thought it would be a great idea to join the memories to make one. As I was pining MrJohnson commented that it was like they were ment to be together.  Because they fit perfectly over dad's blanket. I'm pretty sure I have misplaced one. The blue bandanna.... there is no way she would have been without that color. Nonetheless they do indeed fit perfectly and I could not be more happy.

Are you holding on to something you can't let go of, but no longer use it?

Heart belt

Sorry I have not posted for a couple of days. I was not feeling myself, then I got sick, and yesterday was my birthday. Yay!!! I am another year older :) woot woot.

I decided I wanted to wear a dress and not my usual pants. It's like as soon as it starts to snow I stop wearing skirts and dresses. And bust out the pants and long underwear. Yup, it's that cold here! So this year's birthday landed in the middle of the week so I had to work a couple of hours to make my part time hours...

I've been working on this belt and was happy to finish it by my birthday.  It goes great with this black dress. Right?. Unfortunately I decided this will be the last time I will wear this dress. It was my sister's dress and it is not holding up well anymore. Sad to say and even more sad to see it go to storage I love wearing it. MrJohnson suggested a replacement dress bc he likes it too. He could be on to something. I will need a black dress to wear with my new fabulous red belt!

Fuzzy memories

The perfect cuddle blanket.
I made this baby blanket for my niece when she was born. It's actually made from my mother-in-law's clothes. The original Mrs. Johnson passed before she could meet her youngest two granddaughters. For yrs I had saved a couple of her outfits not knowing what I would do with them. In the end I am so happy I choose to hold on to her clothes. They turned into a great gift that holds irreplaceable memories.

Do you have any special clothes you are holding on to?

Infinite scarf

Here is an example of what else I like to do. Upcycling is so popular these days. I like it because it is green and it makes me feel like I'm lessening my carbon footprint. As you can see I took this dress and turned it into an infinite scarf, well, actually I made two scarfs.
I plan to post more of my creations here and on my fb page
